This volcanic island in the middle of the Canaries is probably not the first place you think of visiting if you are after a taste of Asia, but you might be surprised. Just a four hour flight from the UK, Tenerife could be the short haul alternative to a trip to the Orient. Here’s why –
One of the main attractions in Tenerife, popular with families and groups of all ages, is Siam Park. This Thai themed water park has thrilling rides and slides, as well as man-made beaches and wave pools – all designed so that it feels like you actually could be in Thailand! It is home to the largest Thai building outside of Asia, and comes complete
with Thai floating markets and lost cities!
After a day at the park, head back to your Oriental themed hotel – Hotel Botanico and The Oriental Spa Garden. Here you can immerse yourself in the Oriental World where you will find Indonesian baths, rice wraps, Thai wraps, Zen Shiatsu Massage and reflexology. You can explore the gardens and see the Japanese Koi carp in the ponds and water features for a truly Asian experience.
If it is Asian food that you are craving, then fear not. You will find a choice of Chinese and Thai restaurants in all of the main resorts on the island, ranging from a take-away to enjoy on the beach, to gourmet dining in sumptuously decorated surroundings. Some of the best on the island include:
· The Imperial Tai-Pan Restaurant in Playa de las Americas serves stylish Chinese food, as well as sushi and Teppanyaki in beautifully decorated indoor and outdoor terraces. (1st floor Commercial Centre Safari, Avenida Las Americas, Playa de las Americas)
· Restaurant 88 in La Caleta is a stunning spot for dinner overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with delicious Asian food. (Edificio El Nido, Avenida Las Gaviotas, 38679 La Caleta)
· The Slow Boat II in Los Cristianos serves generous portions of authentic Chinese food with great views of the harbour. (C.C. San Telmo, Los Cristianos)
So if you fancy a taste of Asia but not the long haul flight, then maybe Tenerife could be the place for you!
