Things to Consider When You Rent a Car Abroad

Renting a personal vehicle is one of the best decisions a traveler can make. By taking your transportation into your own hands you open up a whole new world of possibilities. On longer trips, a rental car means a degree of freedom you simply can't get with public transportation. Many popular travel destinations don't even have advanced transportation infrastructure. Without a car you have to depend on expensive taxis to get from point A to points B, C, D, and E. It can really take a chunk out of your budget. If you've already made the decision to pick up a rental car at the airport, make sure you take the following concerns into consideration. 1) Driving laws Driving laws vary greatly from country to country. If you're driving in an urban environment, you need to give local ordinances special consideration. Make it your business to learn the local rules of the road beforehand. In Canada, for example, road signs indicate which turns are permissible at an intersecti

How to Pack for a Semester Abroad

Studying abroad can be an exciting, educational, and positively enlightening experience. Most students who go through study abroad programs in their college careers rank them among the greatest times in their academic years, and this exposure to education in foreign cultures is not something to miss out on. Yet it can be overwhelming to prepare for these excursions. It's easy to get caught up in all the excitement and forget what is really important. Prepare in advance so that you can minimize stress, pack intelligently and economically, and make sure not to forget the essentials in favor of unnecessary items. Remember that you're not moving forever. You're going to be coming back home in just a few months or less, so don't try to pack your entire life into a suitcase. Bring the essentials. You're obviously going to need clothes, and since you're moving for an academic program you're going to need your books. A laptop computer may not be absolutely nece

The Best Jobs for Travel Enthusiasts

Traveling the world is one of the most fun and fulfilling activities of all. Seeing new places, learning about new cultures, sampling exotic cuisine and becoming knowledgeable on local traditions are just a few of the many perks that come with a traveler's passport. And as much fun as it is to travel on leisure time, how great would it be to make a career out of seeing the world? Luckily there is a great market for traveling workers, you just have to know where to look. Of course, you could start by observing the traveling staff that accompanies you on your next journey. Flight attendants obviously get the chance to fly all around the world, and get paid to do it. However, they often spend so

How to Find Gifts to Bring Home for Your Family When You Travel

There are few things more exciting than traveling abroad, but one of them might be all the exciting goodies you get to bring back to your friends and family when you return. It can be an art form, selecting the perfect gift for your closest pals and immediate family members when you take a truly awesome trip. Bringing back the best bauble gives your friends more than just a gift -- the right present tells a story, starts a conversation. Understandably enough, one of the very first things you'll want to consider when picking out gifts is the friend for whom you're buying. Take stock of all the people you think should get souvenirs, and make yourself a mental list. Most vacation destinations don't make their gift selections cheap, so keeping the list short can be a good thing. If you find yourself facing the need to commit your list to paper, you might want to rethink it unless you're working with a nearly-unlimited travel fund. By creating yourself a mental list and

The Benefits of Using a Tour Guide When You Travel

When you're traveling, there's almost always more than one way to get around the area and see the things that you should be seeing. There are few things worse than a trip that winds up feeling like a missed opportunity because you didn't have time to get out and see all of the tourist attractions that you want to see. But how do you make sure you have time to do everything you want? Sometimes your situation works pretty hard against you, and seeking a little bit of outside help can wind up meaning the difference between the trip of a lifetime and a serious disaster (although, either way you'll wind up with a conversation piece when you get back). First and foremost, finding a good tour guide can provide a means to crossing the ever-hindering language barrier if you're staying in a place where your language isn't spoken. Nothing makes getting around harder than not speaking the same language as anybody else, so finding and linking up with a tour guide who speak

Hong Kong Attractions, festivals, food and going out!

New York may be ‘the city that never sleeps' but Hong Kong is the city that never stops. Explore Local Flavors on Your Next International Trip

Foodie confession time: I’ve eaten at a certain well-known fast food restaurant in at least seven countries that I recall. In my youth, far from home, I was comforted by the familiar saltiness of French fries and was intrigued by the slight variations in ketchup on the burgers. I might even have a hamburguesa wrapper tucked away in a scrapbook. Now that my palate has expanded and I’ve learned more about the importance of local food, my taste buds have become an integral part of exploring wherever my travels take me. Terroir is something that has long been appreciated in the world of wine; I’ve discovered that it applies equally well to foods. Every meal provides the chance to learn a little more about the culture, heritage, environment, and taste of a given location. Blood Pudding  by  Mrs. Gemstone The haggis  by  Duncan Brown (Cradlehall) I deeply regret having been to Edinborough and at the time not daring to try the haggis; London and not trying the blood pudding

How to Keep Your Immune System Strong When You Travel

Travelling is always an exciting experience, but it can be dangerous as well. Many travelers find themselves sitting in cramped airplane cabinets, breathing recycled air and spending hours in close quarters with possibly sick passengers. Destinations may be breeding grounds for germs that are relatively harmless to locals, while newcomers find themselves fighting off illness due to a lack of conditioned immunity. This shouldn't scare anyone away from the many joys of travel. Indeed, the experiences found far away from home can be the most memorable and precious. However, it is vital to your health to maintain a strong immune system while you travel. Try to incorporate foods rich in probiotics into your daily diet to build up immune defenses even before travelling is a consideration. Fermented foods and cultured dairy can be excellent additions to your diet. Be sure to take in lots of fiber and consume foods that are easy on the digestive system. Dense, overly processed foods s

Healthy Travel 101: Precautionary Measures for a Great Vacay

There's more to planning an amazing vacation than shelling out beaucoup bucks for first-class plane tickets and a 5-night stay at a resort hotel. Aside from the major points of getting yourself from here to there and securing a place to rest your head, there are all kinds of details that must be attended to if you're going to enjoy a worry-free vacation. And one of the things that people often neglect to consider is the possibility of illness or injury. While most vacations won't take you too far from the pharmacies and hospitals that can offer medical solutions to such problems, you might want to prepare yourself for the fact that you could face additional difficulties securing care, especially when you travel to foreign countries . Your insurance may not be accepted, you might have trouble getting prescription refills forwarded to a new pharmacy, and you may not be able to find exactly what you're looking for. So here are a few precautions you should take on the healt

Should You Rent a Car or Take Public Transportation When You Travel?

This is a rather tough question because there are so many variables to consider before you can make an informed decision. You'll want to figure out which is more cost effective, the amount of time that could be gained or lost by choosing a particular form of transportation, whether or not there could be hassles associated with each, and of course, the relative availability of these types of transport. And each of these concerns will vary by the region you are visiting (amongst other things). So here are just a few issues to tackle before you hop a plane and head for your destination. The first thing to consider is the cost that comes with different forms of transportation. In most cases, renting a car will be the more expensive option, not only because of the sticker price, but also due to the added costs of fuel,

Experience Asia in Tenerife… No, really!

This volcanic island in the middle of the Canaries is probably not the first place you think of visiting if you are after a taste of Asia, but you might be surprised. Just a four hour flight from the UK, Tenerife could be the short haul alternative to a trip to the Orient. Here’s why – by  steve p2008 One of the main attractions in Tenerife, popular with families and groups of all ages, is Siam Park. This Thai themed water park has thrilling rides and slides, as well as man-made beaches and wave pools – all designed so that it feels like you actually could be in Thailand! How To Make Thai Chicken Stir Fry

There are certainly many types of cuisines throughout the world. American cuisine, Italian cuisine, French cuisine, the possibilities are endless. However, one of my favourite types of food is Asian cuisine. One of the most popular types of Asian dishes to date is yes, stir-fry. Stir-fry, originating from China is incorporates two types of cooking techniques. Chao and Bao, chao is similar to western style "sauteing" but instead using a wok. Bao is similar to Chao but the wok is heated to a dull red glow, ingredients are cooked consistently with no stopping in between, unlike chao. Today's recipe is one of my favorite recipes to make, inspired by my trips across Asia and from local restaurants around here that also does great catering in London Ontario . By  poopoorama Chicken Stir Fry with Thai Peanut Sauce • 1 pound of Chicken Breast, cut to 1 inch pieces • 1 pound of Shitake Mushrooms, stems removed and cut into large pieces • ½ cup of Unsalted Cashews •

Top 10 Foods to Try in South Korea

Kimbap   Some rights reserved  by  gamene If you find yourself lucky enough to travel to South Korea, the next challenge is to try as many of the dishes as possible. With limited time and only so much your stomach can handle, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly which dishes to eat. It’s hard to narrow down the list to a few items, but the following are the top 10 Korean dishes that must be tried while in South Korea: 1. Kimchi When it comes to Korean cuisine, the first thing that comes to mind is kimchi. This fermented dish is made of napa cabbage, radish, and other vegetables, along with a variety of seasonings. A common sight at Korean tables, kimchi is both eaten on its own and combined with a variety of other dishes. 2. Ddeokbokki (Spicy Rice Cake)  This dish is most commonly seen in street vendors around South Korea, and is made from cooking rice cakes in a spicy sauce. A variety of other ingredients can also be added to this dish, ranging from sliced fish cake

The 5 Best Majors for Studying Abroad

Study abroad programs are one of the most enticing aspects of higher education. Every year, thousands of American undergraduates climb over each other to claim these selective opportunities. If you think it sounds like fun to spend a semester (or two. Or three...) "studying" in another country, then you're not alone. These programs have a reputation for being light on academic rigor and heavy on the sangria. While that may sometimes be the reality, most study abroad programs are viewed as an asset on a student's resume. Employers and graduate schools understand that study abroad experience is an invaluable experiment in cultural immersion. So what are the best majors for studying abroad? You can't, after all, spend six months in Serbia if you're pursuing one of the many online social work degrees. The truth of the matter is: some majors are routinely selected to go abroad in greater numbers than the rest. If you're dead set on spending part of college

Tips for International Travel with Children

Traveling domestically with children has its challenges. International travel has an entire set of issues of its own; lines in customs, long flights, new foods, and new people. If you are armed with some tricks of the trade and prepare sufficiently, you and your little ones can have an amazingly fun trip to remember always. The first thing to do when traveling abroad is to apply for your child's passport early. Make sure you allow several months before your trip to receive the passport. Expecting a passport weeks before travel is asking for trouble. You also want to make sure there is enough time left before your passport expires when planning your trip. Some countries require that you have at least 3 months remaining before a passport's expiration. When you get the passports, copy them and leave in a safe place in case original is lost or stolen while on your trip. Another pre-trip necessity is a visit to the pediatrician. Notify your child's pediatrician of your upc

Tips for Navigating a Foreign City When You Travel

Traveling to a foreign city can be an experience that you will never forget, and create memories that you will forever cherish. Due to cost and your schedule, the chance to travel is not always as often as you might like, so making the most of your time is crucial.   Some rights reserved  by  FullofTravel The first thing to consider when traveling is how long you can stay in a given city and the basic plan of what you want to do there. Some people like their vacations to consist of lots or rest and relaxation, while others want to keep themselves as busy as possible to get all the sight-seeing in. If you are the type to want to relax on your vacation then maybe look for a city by a beach so you can sprawl out and get a tan all day long. For the more active travelers, try to find a spot with lots to do, whether it is skiing or soaking in the history of a city, make sure you cater your trip to whatever you're interested in. In addition to picking the city, make sure you sel

Food Off: London Vs Paris

Pasta The belief that Paris is Europe’s undisputed gastronomy capital is outdated at best. In recent years, several other European cities have stepped into the limelight and won over the taste buds of tourists. Italy boasts several culinary contenders, including Sorrento, Siena, Rome, and Florence, the last of which has become a particular tourist favourite; Copenhagen, San Sebastian, and Barcelona also receive honourable mentions. But perhaps the most surprising city to claim a spot in the world culinary competition is London, a city that has suffered from a negative—if bland—culinary image for far too long. Over the past decade, London has been lauded by food critics and tourists alike for its gastronomic diversity and innovation. In fact, four London restaurants made the list of the Top 10 European Restaurants on TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2012, putting the rest of Europe to shame. What makes London an exciting culinary destination is that in recent years, the cit

The Pros and Cons of Medical Tourism

There's no getting around the fact that the United States healthcare system is in trouble. As a nation we spend a massive amount of money on medical issues each year, many more times what most other wealthy countries do. Obama's medical policies have been hotly-contested, and although it recently passed a large governmental hurdle, most people still aren't clear if the bill does enough to solve the problem. At the same time, millions of Americans go without healthcare due to the prohibitive expense, and the health insurance than many people carry is insufficient, especially for lower income mothers and the elderly. Due to all of these issues and many more, people are looking outside of the United States for their costly medical issues, and it's actually created something of a medical tourism industry. The basic idea is to find a country with quality doctors that can perform your required procedure at a fraction of the American price. You travel there, have the procedu

Culinary Vacation Options for Foodie Travel Enthusiasts
